Adopt and Artifact Program
Background
In the summer of 2013, our Student Historians initiated the Adopt an Artifact
Program for objects in the Wright Reis Homestead to "... not only highlight
some of these artifacts, but to raise funds to help preserve, conserve,
and/orbetter protect, these objects which have touched each of us in a
different manner," explains Trustee & a founding Student Historian Erika
Panzarino.
Somers Historical Society assisted the students in implementing this
program and has expanded it to include objects in its' own collection.
The Society has been the designated steward of Town of Somers
collections housed at the Wright Reis Homestead since the Homestead's
bequest to the Town of Somers in 1966..
How it works
Any individual or business can identify an object they wish to "adopt" Once
sufficient funds are raised to carry out the determined conservation need, the
object is sent out for work. When possible, Student Historians work with the Society's
Collection Committee to identify objects and track them through the restoration
process.
Participants in the Adopt an Artifact program will have their name affiliated with the
object in the collection archives, listed on signage in Society offices, as well as on
this website and collateral material, when applicable. Adopters also receive an
"Adoption Certificate."
